A tap is a tool for cutting internal threads. A tap is a screw with cut straight or helical chip grooves that form cutting edges. The working part of the tap has cutting and calibrating parts. Taps are made of high-speed steel. Taps can be used on lathes and drilling machines and machining centers (machine taps), as well as for hand tapping. There are also nut taps - used for making nuts. Such a tap has a longer shank and a western (calibrating) cutting part.
